The process is quite interesting. First, we scan your face. This involves creating a 3D image of your head. From this scan we can send the data to either a 3D printer or a CAM carver that will produce the exact image of your face. Once we have produced the model, plastic is vacuumed over the model. Depending on the part of the face that needs protecting, we will prepare the mask that is required to protect you.
At the fitting, we may do some additional trimming removing unnecessary material, and placing straps to make sure the mask stays in place during the game. By the way, you get to keep the head model we make of you.
We do supply these to people other than athletes. If you have had a rhinoplasty procedure, and you feel a little protection would make you feel better during recovery, this is a very good use of this technology. We can scan you at any time, preoperatively or postoperatively to fabricate your protective shield. In most circumstances, the shield can be prepared in 24 hours. Because insurance does not usually help, we attempt to keep the cost of this service low. The cost of the scanning, mold production and mask production is generally no more than $500.00. Also, there are certain types of off the shelf scanners that you may have which is compatible with our equipment. We can help you with this as well.
